Riesling grape variety

Riesling is one of the world's great ambassadors of white wines. Originally from the Rhine Valley, this grape variety first appeared in records in the 15th century, though historians assume its cultivation dates back to Roman times. Quickly recognized for its finesse and ability to convey the singularity of each terroir, it has established itself as a symbol of purity and precision.

In Germany, monks and winemakers helped refine its identity. They discovered early on that it possessed a natural acidity allowing it to age for decades without losing its brilliance. This longevity made it a sought-after wine throughout Europe from the Renaissance onward.

The Expansion of Riesling in Europe and Worldwide

The historical cultivation area of Riesling is in Germany, particularly in the Mosel, Rheingau, and Pfalz regions. The steep slopes and slate soils of the Mosel are particularly renowned for producing crystalline wines, marked by unique tension.

In Alsace, it found a second home. Introduced in the Middle Ages, it is now considered one of the four noble grape varieties there. The wines produced from it are recognized for their straightforwardness, elegance, and aging potential.

It then spread to other wine regions: Austria, Switzerland, Northern Italy, and also the New World. In Australia, particularly in the Clare Valley, it yields straightforward and luminous wines. In New Zealand, it retains its vibrant freshness, while in the United States, it is cultivated in both New York State and on the West Coast. Everywhere, it maintains its identity and its ability to reflect the terroir.

Physical Description of the Grape Variety

Riesling is a late-budding variety, which protects it from spring frosts. Its clusters are compact, medium-sized, with small round yellowish-green berries that take on golden hues when ripe.

The thin skin of its berries contains a juicy and aromatic pulp. The light green foliage is suited to steep slopes where sunlight and soil minerality allow for slow and regular ripening.

Viticultural Characteristics

It prefers poor, stony, and well-drained soils. It particularly thrives on slate, granite, and limestone, which reinforce its tension and minerality.

Being late-ripening, it benefits from a long growing season. This slowness allows it to maintain high acidity, even when it achieves a good richness in sugar. Under the best conditions, it can also be harvested as late harvest or noble rot wines, when the noble rot concentrates its aromas.

Its adaptability is impressive: it expresses both the rigor of German slopes and the generosity of Alsatian sunshine. But whatever the climate, it remains one of the rare white wines to so faithfully express the origin of its vine.

A Unique Aromatic Profile

Riesling is, above all, a wine of purity and freshness. In its youth, it is distinguished by aromas of citrus, green apple, peach, and white flowers. With age, it develops characteristic mineral notes, sometimes described as "petrol-like," which are highly prized by connoisseurs.

On the palate, it seduces with its liveliness, tension, and balance. Riesling is the perfect example of harmony between acidity and aromatic intensity. This structure gives it exceptional aging potential: some wines easily reach 30 or 40 years of maturity, retaining unalterable freshness.

Styles of Wines Produced

Dry Riesling

In Alsace and Germany, dry Riesling is the most common form. These are straightforward, crystalline wines, marked by their minerality and precision. Their liveliness makes them ideal companions for gastronomy.

Sweet and Semi-Dry Styles

Depending on the vintage and winemaking choices, Riesling can also offer slightly sweet cuvées. These wines balance sweetness with a sharp, lively equilibrium, creating a sensation of lightness and indulgence.

Late Harvest and Dessert Wines

In certain years, Riesling reaches an exceptional degree of ripeness. Late harvest and noble rot selections produce wines of great richness, with flavors of honey, candied fruits, and spices, supported by a structuring liveliness.

Sparkling Wines

Riesling also goes into the production of Crémants d'Alsace. Its natural liveliness and freshness make it an ideal grape variety for sparkling wines.

Food and Wine Pairings

The diversity of styles makes Riesling incredibly versatile at the table.

Dry Riesling pairs perfectly with seafood, grilled fish, white meats, or vegetarian dishes.

Sweet versions pair well with Asian cuisine, spicy dishes, or aged cheeses.

Dessert wine cuvées ideally accompany foie gras, fruity desserts, or blue cheeses.

Riesling and Natural Wines

In the natural wine movement, Riesling has found a privileged place. Thanks to its natural acidity and aromatic transparency, it lends itself perfectly to winemaking without additives. Winemakers who work with it naturally seek to reveal the raw expression of the terroir, offering honest, digestible, and luminous wines.

Conclusion: A Universal and Timeless Grape Variety

Riesling crosses centuries without losing its brilliance. It embodies both tradition and modernity, capable of producing straightforward and crystalline dry wines, as well as complex and majestic dessert wines.

Whether it comes from Alsace, Mosel, Australia, or New Zealand, each Riesling tells a unique story: that of a wine faithful to its terroir, always elegant, always luminous.
