Wine as a land of exile and rebirth

Behind the enigmatic name of Ruth Lewandowski, there isn't a straw-hatted winemaker, but an idea, a deep, almost spiritual impulse. Inspired by the biblical book of Ruth – a woman uprooted from her homeland who finds refuge, roots, and renewal elsewhere – the estate embodies a vision of wine as a journey, as a second life. It also intimately reflects the path of Evan Lewandowski, its creator: a man who left the comfort of conventions to get closer to the living, the true, the artisanal vibration. Located in California, USA, Evan does not own any vineyards. He weaves connections, over time and emotions, with places steeped in history, families, landscapes, each telling a different page of this singular viticultural fresco.

Vineyards chosen like friends

Each wine from the Ruth Lewandowski estate is born from an encounter, a dialogue between man and land, between an idea and a place. First, there's Fox Hill, an eccentric gem in Mendocino, an old riverbed bristling with quartz, where rare Italian grape varieties – Vernaccia, Carcajio, Teroldego – thrive as if in an open-air library. Then comes Lost Hills Ranch, a cherished estate, taken over by Sam Bilbro, a friend and accomplice, perched in the Yorkville Highlands: a living, rugged terrain, between sandstone and schist, where the vines twist and turn between 300 and 700 meters above sea level. There, each vintage seems sculpted by the wind, the light, the intensity of the place.

The Testa vineyard, meanwhile, breathes a century of Italian history. Planted in 1912, it is now guarded by Maria, the great-great-granddaughter of the founders. The Carignan, Grenache, and Cabernet there find an earthy nobility, that of gestures repeated with care for over a hundred years. At Rorick Heritage, in the wild heights of Calaveras, it is limestone and schist that dictate the law. The site is rough, spectacular, challenging. The nights are cold, the grapes, late – but the brilliance of the wine is worth every harvest prayer. Gibson Ranch, with its hundred-year-old grey Grenache, nestled in a quiet valley, tells of another era, when vines grew like trees. Finally, Cole Ranch, a tiny AVA lost between Ukiah and Boonville, offers a rare, almost legendary Riesling, on limestone soils and misty hills.

A free and vibrant philosophy

Ruth Lewandowski is, above all, a way of being in the world. Extreme attention, without ostentation. Here, no chemistry, no recipes: we accompany. We observe, we listen. Fermentations are natural, interventions minimal. This is not a posture, but a necessity: to make wine that breathes, that pulsates. Evan does not just graft vines, he weaves friendships. The choice of grape varieties is also one of intuition: Arneis, Cortese, Tinta Roriz, Dolcetto… varieties often absent from Californian maps, but which find a new language here. Because everything is about adaptation, reinvention, fertile exile.

Wines of skin, nerve, and emotion

Ruth Lewandowski wines do not seek perfection. They seek accuracy. They are alive, moving, sometimes a little wild, always sincere. In each cuvée, there is a texture, a tension, a way of telling the story of the season, the hand that guided it, the parcel from which it comes. One finds notes of bright fruits, fresh herbs, mineral dusts, fine but present tannins, like a hand gently placed on a shoulder. These are wines that make you want to share, to talk, to cook, to laugh. Wines of the moment, of memory, and above all, of the future.
