Jacquère grape variety

Jacquère is one of Savoy's emblematic grape varieties. Its history is closely intertwined with that of the Alpine valleys where it has been cultivated for centuries. Although its exact origins remain mysterious, it has been mentioned in local documents since the Middle Ages, proving its deep roots in this mountainous territory. Historians suggest that its name may come from the given name "Jacques," which was very common in the region, or from an ancient winegrowing family that first cultivated it.

Unlike other varieties that have traveled all over the world, Jacquère has remained faithful to its Alpine birthplace. It is one of those rarities intimately linked to a landscape, a climate, and a culture.

A typically Savoyard grape variety

Today, Jacquère is the most planted grape variety in Savoy, covering more than half of the regional vineyard. It is found in many local appellations: Apremont, Abymes, Chignin, Jongieux, Cruet, and also Roussette de Savoie as a blend. It is what gives identity to the region's best-known white wines, particularly those traditionally served with mountain cheeses.

It has been exported very little. It is marginally found in Italian Piedmont, but its cultivation remains almost exclusively concentrated in the Alpine valleys. This rarity contributes to its unique character and strong regional identity.

Physical description

Jacquère is recognized by its medium-sized, rather loose bunches, composed of rounded berries with thin skins, a light yellow that can take on beautiful golden highlights at harvest time. The bunches are airy, which limits the risk of rot in humid climates. The vine itself has moderate vigor and adapts perfectly to the stony and steep soils of the Alpine hillsides.

Viticultural characteristics

Jacquère is a late-ripening variety, usually maturing at the end of the season, which allows it to benefit from beautiful autumn days and maintain remarkable freshness. It is perfectly adapted to the mountain climate: its grapes reach balanced maturity while retaining a natural tension.

It is a demanding plant, which only gives its best on well-exposed hillsides, often on limestone, marl, or schist soils. In these conditions, it expresses all its vivacity and clarity. Its natural vigor must be controlled to avoid overly generous yields that would dilute its character.

A luminous aromatic profile

Its style is recognizable among thousands. The wines made from this vine are very light, marked by a fresh and refreshing framework. On the nose, they reveal delicate floral aromas (hawthorn, acacia), notes of citrus, green apple, sometimes pear or white peach. Mineral nuances are also found, evoking rock and Alpine scree.

On the palate, it stands out for its liveliness, clarity, and clean finish. These are not powerful wines, but rather wines of balance and freshness, which prioritize drinkability and conviviality. Their intensity lies in their ability to express the purity of their origin and to offer a direct, unadorned sensory experience.

Wine styles produced

Jacquère is primarily vinified as a dry white wine. These wines are light, floral, invigorating, and perfectly suited to local gastronomy. They are not designed for long aging, but rather to be enjoyed in their youth, when they best express their vivacity and brilliance.

Some winemakers choose to work with aging on fine lees, which gives it a little more roundness and aromatic complexity. In rare cases, it can also be used in sparkling wines, which highlight its lively and crystalline character.

Food and wine pairings

Jacquère is the natural partner for regional cuisine. It pairs wonderfully with mountain dishes, especially melted cheeses: raclette, fondue, tartiflette. Its fresh and refreshing profile balances the richness and creaminess of these traditional recipes.

It also goes very well with lake fish, such as fera, Arctic char, or trout. Its citrus notes and lively finish make it an ideal companion for seafood and shellfish. Finally, it can be served as an aperitif, where its lightness and drinkability work wonders.

Jacquère and natural wines

Many Savoyard winemakers committed to environmentally friendly viticulture choose to make natural wines from it. It is a variety that lends itself particularly well to this type of vinification: its aromatic purity and frankness allow the quality of the grape and the singularity of the soil to be revealed without embellishment.

In this context, it produces luminous, digestible, and deeply authentic wines that appeal to both connoisseurs and curious individuals looking for new expressions of the vine.

Conclusion: Alpine elegance

It is the embodiment of Savoy in a glass. It conveys the freshness of the mountains, the authenticity of the landscapes, and the conviviality of Alpine tables. A symbol of lightness and purity, it seeks not power but clarity. Its wines, seemingly simple, reveal true finesse and great accuracy.

Through Jacquère, an entire mountain way of life is expressed: that of an honest, joyful, and accessible wine that generously accompanies shared meals. It proves that a local grape variety, remaining faithful to its birthplace, can reach an audience far beyond the borders of its region, simply through the sincerity of its expression.
