Les Grandes Serres

The Grandes-Serres estate, located in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, divides its time between viticulture and winemaking. The latter covers numerous appellations in the south of France, centered around the Rhône, and the estate is predominantly organic, producing wines without added sulfites without necessarily making them a marketing tool. The house's goal is to produce wines with character and faithful to their terroir.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Vaucluse)
?

(whileeverywhere else people were still using barrels), they were the first to ship their wines in this type of container, renewing the face of the wine trade. They are also at the origin of the Appellations d'origine contrôlées, establishing strict and innovative specifications for their wines. The AOC Châteauneuf-du-Pape was the first in France; it will celebrate its ninetieth anniversary in 2026. It produces whites and reds with eighteen authorized grape varieties (Grenache black, Grenache Gris, Grenache Blanc, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Cinsault, Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette (two cultivars), Bourboulenc, Roussanne, Piquepoul class="author-d-1gg9uz65z1iz85zgdz68zmqkz84zo2qovvz69zqgz73zub61z88zz85z5z82znz69zhbpz80zz77zz68zz122z86ce6ez81zqe h-lparen">(three cultivars), Picardan, Terret Noir and Vaccarèse), but no rosé is allowed in the appellation. No connection with wine (although?), but Châteauneuf-du-Pape is famous for having witnessed numerous UFO sightings, the mayor even having issued a municipal decree in 1954 to prohibit such devices from landing on the commune's territory. It is unknown whether the order was intentionally followed, but it is believed to have contributed greatly to the site's fame.

The Domaine des Grandes Serres is a viticulture, trading, and winemaking business founded in 1977 by Camille Serres, and taken over in 2001 by the Picard family, originally from Burgundy. The former general manager, Samuel Montgermont, committed the estate to organic and natural wines, reaffirming a few house principles: developing a strong personality and a beautiful expression of the terroir in each wine, and making wines for all budgets, intended for wine merchants as well as mass retailers. Since 2022, Romain Leroy has been at the helm of the estate, whose activity is divided between merchant winemaking and on-property winemaking. Recent history, through several natural vintages, shows us that the Domaine des Grandes Serres fears neither innovation nor audacity and does not take itself too seriously in an appellation that we often imagine as serious as a pope. Thanks to its natural vintages inspired by science fiction comics (series Wine Comics) and op-art class="author-d-1gg9uz65z1iz85zgdz68zmqkz84zo2qovvz69zqgz73zub61z88zz85z5z82znz69zhbpz80zz77zz68zz122z86ce6ez81zqe h-lparen">(Psychovisuelle), the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation continues to be that of the first times.

Growing Methods and Winemaking

A large part of the vineyard is managed organically, with optimal respect for the environment and biodiversity: grassing, manual harvesting, etc. The estate's wines are mostly free of added sulfites, but no one wanted to shout it from the rooftops because "Our plots are naturally privileged." The mistral wind maintains the health of the vineyard and the sunshine promotes ripeness. The more deliberately natural ranges (Comics and Psychovisuelle) are also organic, without added sulfites, and fermented by yeasts. indigenous people.

Wines

We won't dwell on the many southern wines produced by the estate; their excellence at all price points has already been praised elsewhere. The natural cuvées that interest us come partly from the estate and partly from vines cultivated as merchants. This is the Wine Comics series, each wine bearing the name of the appellation from which it comes: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côtes-du-Rhône, Côtes-du-Rhône-Villages-Visan, and Gigondas.
