Crucella Red 2020,
La Vinicola di Antonio Gismondi
Crucella is known for its undergrowth, mineral, and earthy nose, a lively and acidic attack on the palate, red fruits, cherry on the retro-olfaction, and tannins less present than the deep color would suggest. Certainly a good wine for laying down that will blossom with time. The only red from the estate, it is a beautiful blend of Merlot (33%), Sangiovese (34%), and the ancient local grape variety Freisa (33%), which imparts a slight hint of musky red fruit, but the overall wine is well balanced. The harvest macerates for five or six days in stainless steel vats, then the wine is aged for seven to ten months in the same type of vat.

Antonio Gismondi's azienda is located in Cerreto Sanita, in the Benevento region of Campania. A microclimate gives this area an almost continental feel: humid winds from the Tyrrhenian Sea collide with the first ramparts of the Apennine mountain range, causing condensation in the air and lowering temperatures, which are significantly cooler and more humid than on the coast. If we add a temperature inversion phenomenon between day and night, which is common in the Apennine climate, the freshness of the wines from the Antonio Gismondi estate is nothing mysterious in this southern Italy, which is nevertheless known for its very hot climate. The estate is family-run: for generations, the Gismondi family has cultivated vines and made wine using the most traditional and natural methods, to which biodynamic techniques are added. For a long time, of the fifteen tons of grapes produced each year, one ton was reserved for on-site winemaking for family consumption, with the rest going to the local wine cooperative. It was their meeting with Massimo Marchiori and Antonella of Partida Creus that led Antonio and his wife Anabel to start producing natural wines at home from the entire harvest. The two-hectare vineyard is located between 350 and 380 meters above sea level, on clay and stony soils, with two-thirds facing south. The grape varieties are Merlot, Freisa and Sangiovese for the reds, and Falanghina and Malvasia di Candia for the whites.x

Natural wine with no added sulfites.
The Benevento region is located northeast of Naples, inland from the Campania region. The climate there is subject to "continental" influences, as far as the narrowness of the Italian boot allows. It is here that humid winds from the Tyrrhenian Sea collide with the first ramparts of the Apennines, causing condensation and lowering temperatures. These are cooler and rain more frequent than on the coast, and winter brings its share of fog and nighttime frosts. Adding to this the phenomenon of day-night temperature inversion, which is common in the Apennine climate, the freshness of the wines from the Antonio Gismondi estate is nothing mysterious in the proverbially hot southern Italy.
The Gismondi winery is located in Cerreto Sannita, in the green hills of the Benevento Sannio, about thirty kilometers northwest of Benevento. For generations, the Gismondi family has cultivated vines and made wine there using the most traditional and natural methods, based on a millennia-old respect for nature. These techniques have long been supplemented by biodynamic methods.
For a long time, Pasquale and Maria Gismondi followed the family tradition, producing approximately fifteen tons of grapes per year. Of this harvest, approximately one ton was always reserved for vinification at the azienda for the Gismondi family's consumption. The remaining fourteen tons were sold to the local wine cooperative.
In 2016, Massimo Marchiori, from the Catalan winery Partida Creus, encouraged them to visit the Natural Wines Fair in Cologne to inspire them to develop their winemaking business. Pasquale and Maria returned from Cologne convinced that their wines had a place on the international market. They then decided to vinify their entire harvest biodynamically and as natural wine: the azienda's wines took off.
Today, the estate is owned by their son Antonio and his wife Anabel. They also own an olive grove and a vegetable garden cultivated entirely organically and biodynamically.
The vineyard covers two hectares on a small hill, between 350 and 380 meters above sea level. The soils are mainly clayey and stony. Two-thirds of the estate faces due south; this territory includes the plots used for the Crucella red wines and the Fontana white wines (six-year-old vines). The remaining plots, facing southwest, are dedicated to the Pietre and Cerreto white wines. The vines in these plots are approximately thirty years old. The red grape varieties are Merlot, Freisa, and Sangiovese; the white grape varieties are Falanghina and Malvasia di Candia.
Viticulture at the Gismondi family estate is traditional, with no chemical inputs—pesticides, fertilizers, or herbicides—added to the vines. Biodynamic farming has been practiced for generations, in the vineyard, olive grove, and vegetable garden. The vines are trained on poles.
Without any added chemicals, vinification is carried out in stainless steel vats. The whites are obtained by direct pressing, except for the Cerreto cuvée, which macerates for four days in vats. The red, Crucella, macerates for five or six days in vats. No sulfur is added at bottling.
Small estate, small yields, small production: the Antonio Gismondi estate produces four cuvées: three whites and one red. The three white cuvées are Pietre (Malvasia di Candia, Falanghina), Cerreto (Malvasia di Candia), and Fontana (Falanghina). The red, Crucella, is composed of Merlot, Freisa, and Sangiovese.
