Where?

The Alta Tuscia Viterbese is located in Lazio, in the north-east of the province of Viterbo, on the borders of Umbria. This region with volcanic soil is considered one of the most beautiful in Italy due to its rock formations called calanche, visible around the medieval village of Civita di Bagnoregio. The soft tuff rock, eroded by water, stands in sharp ridges called "knife blades" (lame di coltello), delimiting deep valleys. In this great natural beauty, the waterways continue to erode the soil. Since Etruscan times, local life has never been easy, so much so that Alta Tuscia has been nicknamed "the dying land." Civita di Bagnoregio is perched on a steep peak and Lubriano is, similarly, balanced on the opposing peak. This is where the Corvagialla estate is located. Lake Bolsena and the Azienda Le Coste, whose wines are also in the Culinaries catalog, are only a few kilometers away. In fact, this small territory between Viterbo, Orvieto and Bolsena turns out to be a nursery of young natural winemakers who are helping to restore dignity to these deprived lands.

The estate was founded in 2007 around a small ruined farmhouse situated on four hectares of land. Why "yellow crow" (corva gialla)? No one really knows; it is a very old name that the current owner, Beatrice Arweiler, wanted to keep. First, she restored the farmhouse and planted three hundred olive trees of the Frantoio and Leccino varieties: at Corva Gialla, olive oil was made before wine. The farm soon developed into mixed farming and animal husbandry: vegetable garden, orchard, chickens, geese, goats, and donkeys, not forgetting the dogs and cats. Beatrice remembers her great-grandparents' winery in Rhineland: her small earthly paradise was just waiting for vines. They were planted in 2010 with the help of Gian Marco Antonuzzi, from the Le Coste estate, while Beatrice also began the construction of a winery.

Terroir and grape varieties

While the friable volcanic soils endanger the villages, they are admirably suited to viticulture due to their richness in mineral elements, particularly iron, which gives the wines their typical character. As for the olive trees, the grape varieties of the four hectares of vines are local: Sangiovese and Ciliegiolo for the reds; Grechetto d'Umbria, Trebbiano and Vermentino for the whites. The planting density is six thousand vines per hectare. The vines are, of course, ten years old, and the average altitude of the plots is 450 meters.

Cultivation methods

Beatrice's priority is respect for nature: since 2018, the estate has been biodynamic and organically certified (BioAgricert). The vines, pruned in simple Guyot, are cultivated without inputs: no herbicides, fertilizers, or chemical pesticides. Harvesting is entirely manual with meticulous sorting of the grape bunches.

Winemaking

In the cellar, winemaking is non-interventionist, using indigenous yeasts and without the addition of sulfites, enzymes, or any activators. Both whites and reds are made from destemmed grapes, with skin maceration of about three weeks, combined with punching down or pumping over as needed. Barrel aging generally lasts six months (24 months for the Poggio Pastene cuvée), followed by six months in bottle. Bottling is done at the estate's cellar, without filtration, after decantation.

Wines

The wines of Azienda Corva Gialla are traditionally crafted, straightforward, elegant, and profound, fully expressing the volcanic minerality of their soil. Simplicity and elegance also characterize the graphics of the labels and the names of the cuvées. The first red is called Vino Rosso, the white Vino Bianco. The latter is a macerated Grechetto in the pure Orvieto tradition, with a superb golden color, intense aromas of yellow flowers and yellow fruits (apricot), followed by citrus (citrus) and balsamic notes. On the palate, freshness, flavor, and aromatic persistence. For reds, Rosso, Poggio Pastene, and Rosso Delle Grotte are 100% Sangiovese, Rosso Cereza is 100% Ciliegiolo: an abundance of red and black fruits, plum, and white pepper.
