Nerello Mascalese grape variety

Nerello Mascalese is a red grape variety native to Sicily, more precisely from the slopes of Etna, where it has reigned supreme for several centuries. It owes its name to the village of Mascali, located on the slopes of the volcano, and to the color "nerello" meaning "blackish" in the local dialect.

Its cultivation dates back at least to the 17th century, a period during which writings attest to its presence around Catania. From its beginnings, this noble grape was considered a variety capable of producing wines of great finesse, powerful and elegant, reflecting the volcanic terroir where it thrives.

For a long time, it remained confidential and confined to eastern Sicily, but today it is experiencing a real boom thanks to the viticultural renaissance of Etna. Wine lovers from all over the world are discovering its unique qualities, often compared to those of Pinot Noir or Nebbiolo.

A grape variety deeply linked to Etna

Nerello Mascalese is above all associated with Etna Rosso DOC, the emblematic appellation for red wines produced on the slopes of the Sicilian volcano. Planted between 400 and 1000 meters above sea level, it benefits from a unique climate: warm days, cool nights, volcanic soils rich in minerals.

These particular conditions favor slow maturation, giving wines of great aromatic complexity and with a natural acidity that gives them remarkable aging potential.

Although its main stronghold remains Etna, it is also found in other areas of Sicily, such as Faro DOC, in the north-east of the island, and in some vineyards in the provinces of Catania and Messina.

Synonyms and appellations

This Sicilian grape variety is mainly known as Nerello Mascalese, but there are local synonyms such as Niuriddu Mascalisi or Nerello di Mascali. It is often blended with its close cousin, Nerello Cappuccio, which brings color and roundness.

The most prestigious appellation that highlights it remains Etna Rosso DOC, but it is also found in IGT Sicilia and in some natural or micro-production cuvées outside the appellation.

Physical description of the grape variety

Nerello Mascalese is distinguished by its vigor and its adaptation to stony and well-drained soils. Its bunches are large, cylindrical and quite compact. The medium-sized berries have a thin skin of dark red tending towards bluish black.

The leaves are medium-sized, trilobed, dark green, and maturity is relatively late: it is generally harvested in October, sometimes even in November depending on the altitude. This slow maturation favors aromatic complexity and concentration.

Viticultural particularities

Nerello Mascalese fully expresses itself on volcanic soils rich in ash and basalt. It tolerates strong temperature variations well, which allows it to maintain freshness and acidity even in the hot climates of Sicily.

The vine is often trained in alberello (traditional goblet), an ancient method still widely used on Etna, which protects the bunches from wind and sun. In more modern areas, it is also trellised.

If it is carefully vinified and at low yields, this Etna red reveals wines of great depth. On the other hand, with too high yields, it can produce more diluted and less expressive cuvées.

A unique aromatic profile

Nerello Mascalese seduces with its ability to express the volcanic terroir. It presents a light ruby to garnet color, sometimes slightly translucent, reminiscent of Pinot Noir.

On the nose, it reveals a complex bouquet: red fruits (cherry, raspberry, pomegranate), dried flowers, aromatic herbs, sweet spices and smoky notes linked to the basaltic soils. With age, tertiary aromas of blond tobacco, leather, truffle and tar appear, sometimes reminiscent of Piedmontese Nebbiolos.

On the palate, it is a wine that is both structured and elegant. The tannins are present but fine, the lively acidity balances the richness, and the finish is often long and mineral. It is a wine of contrast: ample and airy, powerful and delicate.

Wine styles produced

Etna reds

The most emblematic style is Etna Rosso, often composed mainly of Nerello Mascalese, complemented by Nerello Cappuccio. These wines combine crisp fruit, spices and minerality, with impressive aging potential.

Ageing wines

Thanks to its natural acidity and structured tannins, it ages admirably. Etna wines can evolve for 15 to 20 years, developing complex notes of undergrowth, tobacco and leather.

Rosés

Nerello Mascalese is also used to produce elegant and gastronomic rosés, with beautiful freshness, marked by notes of strawberry, pomegranate and Mediterranean herbs.

Natural wines

Many Sicilian winemakers today work this noble Sicilian grape as natural wines. Its transparency and energy make it an ideal grape variety to express the purity of the grape and the strength of the volcanic terroir without artifice.

Food and wine pairings

Nerello Mascalese is a gastronomic wine par excellence. Thanks to its structure and freshness, it accompanies many dishes:

Young and fruity versions pair with Sicilian cold cuts, antipasti, grilled white meats.

More structured cuvées are enjoyed with pasta with tomato sauce, roasted lamb, game or aged cheeses.

Old vintages find their place with sophisticated dishes such as truffle risotto or roast veal.

Rosés, on the other hand, pair perfectly with seafood and summer cuisine.

The grape variety and Sicilian identity

Much more than a simple grape, Nerello Mascalese is the symbol of Sicily's wine renaissance. For a long time associated with mass viticulture, the island has experienced a revival over the past twenty years thanks to winemakers who value their indigenous grape varieties.

It embodies this rediscovered identity: a wine that speaks of its volcanic land, its steep slopes and its extreme climate. It has become the ambassador of a modern Sicily, proud of its heritage and open to the world.

Conclusion: a volcanic and noble grape variety

Nerello Mascalese is a unique grape variety, at the crossroads of Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo in its style and refinement. From Etna, it expresses, like few others, the minerality and energy of a terroir.

Versatile, it can produce young and crisp wines, fresh rosés or deep red wines for long aging. It seduces enthusiasts from all over the world and is establishing itself as one of the great Mediterranean wines.

Tasting a glass of this volcanic grape variety is to immerse oneself in the soul of Sicily, between fire and rock, between sea and volcano, where the vine tells the story of an untamed land.
