Terrepianca

Sacile (Friuli-Venezia Giulia), Italy

Where?

The Terrepianca estate (sometimes spelled Terre Pianca, "white lands" in the Friulian dialect) is located in Sacile, in the province of Pordenone. Crossed by the Livenza river, this small town is on the border of Veneto, not far from the Friulian Alps (Carnic Prealps). It is a recent wine property that practices organic farming and natural wine production. It also devotes itself to fruit polyculture: old varieties of apples for cider and hazelnuts. The owners' objective is to create a circular economy farm that finds its balance through the forces of nature without depending on human society. Organic and biodynamic farming is practiced on the entire estate.

Terroir, vineyard and grape varieties

Terrepianca is a twelve-hectare property with vines on clay soils (hence the name of two of its cuvées). The twenty-year-old vines are of local Friulian grape varieties: friulano (sauvignon à gros grains or sauvignon de la Corrèze in France), pinot grigio (pinot gris) for the sparkling white, refosco (mondeuse) and refosco a peduncolo rosso, a sub-variety of the former.

In the vineyard and in the cellar

Organic and biodynamic farming has been practiced since the estate's inception (2021), it is an initial commitment. Indigenous grape varieties are transformed into natural wines using gentle and environmentally friendly methods: no filtration, no fining, fermentation with indigenous yeasts, skin maceration for several cuvées. Terrepianca currently produces a still white wine made from friulano (Argilla bianco), a still red wine made from refosco a peduncolo rosso (Argilla rosso), a natural sparkling rosé made from refosco (Argine rosso frizzante) and a natural sparkling white made from pinot grigio (Argine bianco frizzante). These are enjoyable, pleasant, tasty, refreshing wines, with the typical citrus note of the Friulian region for the whites, and a beautiful rustic and artisanal tone for the reds.
