Ladidadi-Pinheiro wines are the result of a meeting and a friendship: that of the globetrotting wine merchant Florian Tonello and the Portuguese winemaker Hugo Pinheiro, from the Dão region. In Penalva do Castelo (Viseu wine district), they produce several vintages of natural red and white wines using organic farming methods and without the addition of sulfites.

Penalva do Castelo (Dão,Portugal)
Originally from California, Florian Tonello is a natural wine cellar master (doubled of a DJ) who has always known how to create his projects from scratch and all over Europe. This free spirit, for twenty years, has dedicated his life to advancing the cause of natural wine from city to city. His business began in London, in the Bethnal Green district, with a wine shop simply named after its address: 259 Hackney Road. A few years later, Florian moved to Berlin where he created the company Ladidawines. Three years later, he decided to start from scratch in a new city: Lisbon, where he renovated a premises with his own hands, practically without funding. Yet he was right: the Ladidadi project was a resounding success, demand for natural wines exploded, and the venue found its audience, to the point where Florian was able to organize Pura Sede in 2019, the first festival in Lisbon entirely dedicated to natural wines.
Florian didn't stop there. 2021 was the year of a brand new project: he met winemaker Hugo Pinheiro in front of the latter's vineyard in Penalva Do Castelo, in the Dão wine region. The first proposal was to make a thousand bottles of wine from Hugo's grapes; it was the beginning, for the wine merchant and the winemaker, of a beautiful friendship and a passionate activity that would take them far. Agreeing on all points, they agreed to take risks to realize their dream: to organize their own production of natural wine without added sulfites. Thus, they began with a vintage of a thousand bottles and soon found themselves with six different vintages and 3,500 liters in the vats. This convinced Florian to leave his home in Lisbon to settle in Penalva do Castelo, in the Dão wine region, where he engaged in viticulture and winemaking alongside Hugo Pinheiro. In January 2023, he announced on his Instagram account the purchase of a farm with one and a half hectares of organic vineyards and three hectares of olive trees. The story continues…
Terroir, plot and grape varieties
The Dão wine region was recognized in 1908. It is located in central Portugal, in the province of Beira Alta, and is characterized by a landscape of steep hills with granite soils. Three zones are distinguished: Coimbra, Guarda, and Viseu. Known for producing powerful, balanced and succulent red wines, rich in notes of black fruits and spices, it is sometimes nicknamed the “Little Portuguese Burgundy”, but the The predominance of red wines is gradually fading in favor of quality white wines, often made from the Encruzado grape variety. Whatever the color, the appellation has seen an increase in quality over the past twenty years. The soils are mainly granitic and the grape varieties of the Dão are, in red, the touriga nacional (variety dominant), the tinta roriz, the Mencia, Alfrocheiro Preto, and Encruzado. For whites, Bical, Cerceal, and Maivasia Fina.
The winemaking village of Penalva do Castelo, where Ladida/Pinheiro wines are produced, is located in the Viseu subregion. The estate comprises 2.65 hectares of vines planted on granite, clay, and sandy soils. The altitude of the estate is between 420 and 460 meters and the plots are exposed to the south and surrounded by pine forests, chestnut trees, mountain ranges, as well as an olive grove. The vines were planted between 1991 and 1993; An older section was planted in 1984.
In the vineyard and at the winery
The Pinheiro estate is farmed organically, with yields around 4.5 tons per hectare. Macerations, except for the orange cuvée, are relatively brief (between two and six days). The estate uses concrete and stainless steel vats for fermentation. These are spontaneous and are produced by indigenous yeasts. The wines are not filtered before bottling.
The Wines
The estate's wine production represents the full range of the Dão appellation, ranging from full-bodied red wines to dry, mineral whites. The grape varieties are those of the appellation, and the wines are characteristically straightforward, fruity, and full-bodied. A white maceration cuvée is made from Malvasia.
