Where?

Gaillac is a region in the southwest that feels like a well-kept secret. Its magnificent rolling landscapes have rightly earned it the nickname "French Tuscany," but we keep repeating it to ourselves to avoid arousing too much curiosity. Partially missed: ecstatic tourists (outside of Covid-19) climb the steep streets of Cordes-sur-Ciel, many of whose shops are owned by other ecstatic tourists from across the Channel. The region's splendor is no longer a secret. No matter, the Gaillac region has other treasures in store, primarily wine. Gaillac, whose art of living has ancient, Virgilian overtones, is the oldest vineyard in France with two thousand years of history, rich in its many ancient indigenous grape varieties — mauzac, ondenc, len de l’el (loin-de-l’œil), muscadelle, duras, prunelart, braucol (or fer servadou). A vineyard rooted in time also means winegrowers with their feet firmly planted in the earth, in love with their terroir and eager to share its riches, particularly using the natural method, which is particularly popular in the area. It is here, on the left bank of the Tarn, just southwest of Gaillac, that Bois-Moisset is located, the estate of peasant winegrowers Sylvie Ledran and Philippe Maffre. As much as a winery, it's an organic mixed farm where you can buy lentils, cereal flours, sunflower oil, and grape juice. A superb herd of heritage cattle breeds such as Lourdes, Salers, and Aubrac thrives there. Guest rooms are available in the summer. All this is enough to describe a true little Tarn paradise, a "green setting," as the winemakers advertise on their Instagram account.

Terroir, plots, and grape varieties

The fifteen hectares of vines are located on plains that are sometimes gravelly, sometimes sandy-loamy, whose soils were deposited by the Tarn River several millennia ago. This pedological character (boulbène), comparable to that of Bordeaux gravel, produces fine wines ranging from fruit to spice, depending on the grape variety. Syrah and Duras dominate the grape varieties, alongside local varieties such as Braucol and Prunelart. Red varieties predominate, but the estate also produces whites.

Growing Methods

Organic farming has been well established at the estate since the 1990s. The vines, pruned in goblet style, are grassed, and the soil is enriched by planting green manure (fava beans, oats, rye, etc.). Harvests are carried out by hand.

Vinification

With low yields, the wines are concentrated. Vatting is done with whole bunches. Vinification is carried out without any added sulfur.

The Wines

Mainly reds, the wines of Domaine Bois-Moisset appear, according to tasters, like a firework of flavors. Everyone agrees on their crisp fruitiness—red berries, blackberry, blackcurrant—and there are also more secondary notes like leather, spices (cardamom, pepper), violet, some animal touches, and generally a nice acidity that gives them lightness and digestibility. The tannins are described as fine and delicate, loose, giving a fluid structure.
