Where?

L’Antenet, a family wine estate Bessières is located in the lower Lot Valley, near the medieval village of Puy-l'Évêque, in the heart of the Cahors appellation. In addition to its winemaking function, it is a mixed crop and livestock farm distinguished by its fruit production. Danis Bessières, the third generation of organic winemakers at L’Antenet, has been producing his own natural wines since 2018 at his Danis dans la vigne facility, using grapes purchased from the family estate.

To tell the story of the estate, Danis Bessières evokes the pioneering work of his grandfather, Pierre Bessières. It was he who, in 1983, instilled the philosophy of organic farming in L’Antenet (and more broadly, L’Antenet being the whole first organic vineyard in the Cahors appellation). It first acquired the Lemaire-Boucher label, then Nature & Progrès and finally AB (Agriculture). His initial goal was to produce organic wines within a collective, but "it was probably a bit too early, although in keeping with history," explains Danis. In the second half of the 1980s, Pierre Bessières left the cooperative and built a winery. Thus was born the Domaine de L’Antenet, but Pierre passed away before he could take advantage of this new tool.

His son Philippe took over and released his first vintages in 1989 and 1990. "Beyond the concern not to pollute the land—a central concern of any organic farming approach—" class="author-d-1gg9uz65z1iz85zgdz68zmqkz84zo2qovvz69zqgz73zub61z88zz85z5z82znz69zhbpz80zz77zz68zz122z86ce6ez81zqe h-mdash">—, explains Danis, my father was always concerned with producing wines that were digestible and that did not harm the health of the person who drank them. He also always tried to produce a wine that was financially accessible to everyone, and I too try to respect this philosophy that has made us who we are today."

Danis admits to having become interested in the vine relatively late in life, despite growing up on the family estate. A literary graduate and former social sciences student, he first lived for a time in London, where he worked in restaurants and learned about wine service. After two years, he returned to L'Antenet and tried his hand at winemaking. A year later, he created his own business, Danis dans la vigne, which allowed him to buy grapes from his mother and aunt to make his own wines. With his father retiring in 2022, Danis continues to make his own wines while taking over production at the Domaine de l'Antenet.

Terroir, plots, and grape varieties

The estate covers ten hectares in the valley, close to the Lot, a good half of which is planted with Malbec, the king of grape varieties. the Cahors appellation. The rest is made from local grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Colombard (for the whites) and Jurançon noir, as well as recent INRA creations: ségalin (black) ederena (two Basque black grape varieties). The vines are between thirty and forty years old (ten years old for the Cabernet Francs). These riverine terroirs are dominated by silt-siliceous soils, with a lot of sand and some clay. The subsoil is mainly composed of limestone gravel.

Cultivation Methods

The Antenet Estate, certified organic (Nature & Progrès, AB), is also biodynamicde facto (without mg/l, no more, after malolactic fermentation, just before bottling). In 2002, he completely stopped using sulfites on his reds and shortly after on the rosés. Since the whites date from the mid-2010s, it had been a long time since he had stopped using sulfites, and so they were all produced without. When I ask him why he stopped adding sulfur to his wines, his answer is unequivocal: Because it's useless, there's no need. » Danis's Wines in the vineyard therefore do not contain more inputs than those of the Antenet estate.

Vinification

Vinified without any additives, the wines are fermented using indigenous yeasts, unfined and unfiltered. The macerations are short (but intense, says Danis) and the aging is done in stainless steel or concrete vats, which preserves the fruit and character of the grapes.

Wines

Unsurprisingly, Danis dans la vigne's wines reflect the grape varieties and terroir of Cahors, particularly Malbec, which can, however—unlike most of the region—give way to other grape varieties in the red wines. These are colorful, lively, dense, and energetic wines, fresh and easy to drink. The reds lean toward black fruits and plums, while the whites are fresh and lively, sometimes with a slight sparkle upon opening.
