June 2025 is officially the hottest month ever recorded. Cities are sweltering, nights offer no relief, and fountains run dry. But while you desperately search for a fan or a cool spot, the vineyard, on the other hand, is suffering severely. Because no, the vine is not a Mediterranean superhero insensitive to heatwaves. It resists, certainly, but repeated heatwaves, extreme drought, and violent storms are exhausting it, just as they are exhausting our winegrowers.
Leaves fall, soil cracks, grapes burn. In some regions like Corbières or Roussillon, the vine will not last 50 years without adaptation. Water is scarce (sometimes less than 300 mm/year), roots search in vain, storms wash away dry soils like a Karcher blast, hailstorms rage and break everything in their path... and downy mildew returns like an unwanted ex.
And if you thought natural wine was spared, think again: more sugar = more alcohol = native yeasts in distress. The result? Some cuvées end up with fermentation issues or a reluctant touch of sulfur. That's also the reality on the ground. But courage and precision still hold strong, as at Domaine Fond Cyprès in the Corbières, who produce bottles with just as much freshness!
The good news? Our winegrowers are not sitting idly by.
They test, they innovate:
🌳 Agroforestry : trees, hedges, tall grasses to bring shade and humidity, as at Domaine Einhart!
🍇 Resistant grape varieties : a return to forgotten varieties or modern hybrids, head to La Tribu Alonso to see how it's done!
🧬 Complantation & biodiversity to break the chain of diseases.
🌿 Essential oils and herbal teas (valerian, horsetail, nettle) to naturally relieve the vine, like Domaine Serre Besson in the south of France!
🧪 Smart blending in the cellar: fresh grape varieties + sun-drenched grape varieties = good balance. And here... all our winemakers are doing the work!!
🔥 Heatwaves, droughts, diseases, hail… winemakers are adapting.
🌍 The climate is changing and the vine is suffering.
🌱 Biodiversity, resistant grape varieties, agroforestry, essential oils: concrete solutions.
🍷 Even in the cellar, we are innovating to cope with the heat!
🙏 At Culinaries, we support these winegrowers who hold the fort when the thermometer soars.
