Since 1987, Jeff Coutelou has cultivated 13 hectares of living vines in Puimisson, a pioneer of natural winemaking. On a rich and sun-drenched terroir, he crafts free-spirited wines, made without additives, full of energy and sincerity. Each wine, whether red, white, rosé, or a spirit, is a poem rooted in the earth, an ode to life, to be shared with simplicity.

In the heart of Languedoc, between the salty breeze of the Mediterranean and the first undulations of the foothills, Mas Coutelou unfurls its thirteen hectares of living vines. We are in the south of France, in this sunny and untamed land where the vine takes deep root, much like Jeff Coutelou, a passionate and pioneering winemaker. Since 1987, Jeff has cultivated his plots using organic farming methods, long before the word became commonplace. His commitment is total, sincere, and radical in its simplicity: to make honest, rooted wines, both humble and soulful. At Mas Coutelou, the winemaker is not merely an artisan of taste; he is a conveyor of memory, the attentive guardian of a landscape shaped by generations.
“Where there is wine, there is no ugliness,” wrote Baudelaire. And in this estate, everything is designed to preserve beauty: in daily gestures, in shared silences with the vines, in the slow shaping of each vintage. Here, wine is made as if writing a poem.
The terroir of Mas Coutelou is a true Mediterranean patchwork, bathed in light and swept by the winds. Clay-limestone, friable marl, Villafranchian pebbles: each soil offers a unique tone. This geological diversity is reflected in the plurality of cultivated grape varieties. In addition to the emblematic red grapes of the south—Syrah, Carignan, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cinsault—there are rare and precious white varieties: Carignan Blanc, Macabeo, Muscat, Grenache Gris… Some plots, such as Flower Power or Peilhan, blend up to thirteen grape varieties in a joyful mixed planting, like a lively conversation between species.
The vines here are cared for with rigor and gentleness. Plowing is kept to a minimum to preserve the microbial life of the soil. Treatments are exclusively plant-based; actions are manual, respectful, and attentive. Mas Coutelou is a sanctuary of biodiversity: over a thousand olive trees have been planted, living hedges border the rows, trees provide protection, and buffer zones host beneficial insects and curb erosion. True to Seneca's wisdom—“There is no favorable wind for the sailor who doesn't know where he is going”—Jeff Coutelou charts his course with determination: always with nature, never against it.
In the coolness of the cellar, wine is made without artifice. No added yeast, no inputs, no filtration, not even a hint of sulfur. The winemaker follows the rhythm of the moon, listening to the juice, its silences, its impulses. Some solera barrels, never emptied for over two centuries, house a liquid memory, a slow alchemy, a living treasure. The cellar here becomes a place of patience, of respect, an almost sacred space where wine takes its time to become.
Mas Coutelou wines do not seek to impress. They prefer to whisper. They speak of garrigue, ripe fruit, subtle spices, sun-baked stone. They possess a free and earthy charm, a silky touch, a filigreed acidity, a vibrant energy. Colette said: “Wine is a teacher of taste; it is the liberator of the spirit and the illuminator of intelligence.” Each bottle here tells a story—that of a man, a land, a precious balance between instinct and exacting standards.
Deep reds, sunny whites, siesta rosés, but also kinas, grappas, fines, or juniper berry gin: all bottles from Mas Coutelou invite you to the table, to share, to truly live the moment. “Make your life a dream, and a dream a reality,” wrote Saint-Exupéry. Jeff Coutelou has done it. His dream fits in a glass.
