Antonella Gerosa and Massimo Marchiori

Where?

Partida Creus is a winery located in Bonastre, in the Baix Penedès region of southern Catalonia (Tarragona province). The Bonastre massif is a quiet and unspoiled area of the Penedès appellation, which was once known primarily for its low-end wines. Things are quite different at Partida Creus: a couple of Italian architects, originally from the Langhe region (the Barolo region), decided to leave Barcelona in 2007 in search of peace and nature. When Antonella and Massimo moved to Bonastre, they found numerous abandoned vineyards and a dizzying variety of forgotten local grape varieties, even threatened with extinction because they were rejected by the Designation of Origin. They take over these vines and give them a new lease on life through organic farming and natural winemaking. Partners of Slow Food, they apply the movement's philosophy to their crops: recovery and conservation of winemaking heritage, respect for nature. For them, it is a work of love whose essence can be tasted in each of their exquisite bottles.

Terroir and soils

The soils of the Penedès appellation are poor, clay-sandy, gravelly or clay-limestone, offering a good balance between drainage and deep water conservation.

Plot and grape varieties

Vinyater, sumoll, garrut, monastrell, ull de perdiu, sumoll, queixal de llop, cariñena, trepat, ceciat parent, maccabeu, parellada, pansé, vinel.lo, bobal, cartoixà vermell or xarel.lo: when we tell you that Partida Creus is a small conservatory of native Catalan grape varieties, we are not telling you of stories. Moscatel, Grenache, Merlot, and Cabernet (among others) are also grown.

Growing Methods

Viticulture is biodynamic, artisanal, and entirely manual: the small size of the plots would prevent access to large mechanical equipment. Instead, the mule Vincenza and the horse Orazio help work the vines. No chemical treatments are used: cultivation is carried out according to biodynamic cycles and lunar phases, for a limited yield of grapes of excellent organic quality. Harvesting, of course, is manual.

Vinification

The grapes are vatted using skin-contact maceration (skins and stalks). After crushing, the musts ferment one after the other and are added to prolong the fermentation process. Only indigenous yeasts are involved in both fermentation phases (alcoholic and malolactic). Before bottling without added sulfur (except in exceptional cases and at homeopathic doses), the wine rests for seven months in stainless steel tanks. No filtration.

The Wines

The estate's bottles, marked with two large, flat letters indicating the cuvée, are instantly recognizable. Red or white, these wines tell the story of the Mediterranean in a unique way. Vibrant and lush, they exude life. Blends can include up to seven or eight grape varieties. The reds are juicy, fruity, straightforward, and fresh. The whites often offer a certain salinity with notes of white flowers (lime, hawthorn) and honey. Their liveliness pairs very well with pan-fried or grilled Mediterranean-style seafood. The reds, with their suppleness and pleasantness, can be paired with many dishes.
