Alsace stretches over a high, narrow area between the foothills of the Vosges Mountains to the west and the Rhine plain to the east, the river marking the German border. In the south, the Alsatian vineyards begin near Mulhouse and end in the north near Strasbourg. This very old wine-growing region produces mainly renowned dry white wines, some rosés and reds of Pinot Noir, as well as crémants. Therefore, in Alsace, you will mainly find dry white wines made from seven main white grape varieties, either single varietals or blended: Riesling, Sylvaner, Muscat, Gewurztraminer, Auxerrois, Pinot Blanc, and Pinot Gris. These white wines can be dry, sweet, or semi-sweet. Skin maceration of white wines, abandoned for several decades, is currently experiencing a renaissance and reinforces the mineral and taut side of the wines. If we had to summarize the style of Alsace white wines and Alsace grape varieties, it would be the combination of fresh minerality and pronounced aromatic flavors. Dry white wines from Alsace offer freshness and fruity notes, sometimes very aromatic, a quality that can be enhanced by late harvests, resulting in sweet and fragrant wines. Gewurztraminer and Riesling, in particular, are among the most fragrant grape varieties in the world. Alsace red wines, made from Pinot Noir, are typically smooth and clear, with little extraction. All Alsace wines are magnificent wines for aperitifs, fine dining, and special occasions. Discover our selection of the best natural Alsatian wines!

What is the fruitiest white wine from Alsace? A difficult question for this region: on the one hand, the fruitiness of Alsace white wines depends largely on the vinification and ripeness of the grapes, and on the other hand, all white wines made from Alsatian grape varieties are very fruity, some more than others. It should be noted, however, that the grape varieties producing the fruitiest wines are Gewurztraminer, Muscat, and Auxerrois. Riesling is known for its mineral notes. The choice of bottle will depend on the desired food and wine pairing: aperitif, fish dish, cheese, dessert, etc.
What is the typical tasting note for an Alsace white wine?
To enjoy an Alsace white wine, it should be chilled but not iced. Its tasting begins with the color, a pale blond color that can be enhanced by maceration. The nose then opens with light and fragrant notes, with frequent floral notes (honeysuckle, rose, wisteria, freesia). This lightness persists on the palate, with opulent and exotic fruity notes (for Gewurztraminer and Muscat) or tending more toward citrus, white fruits, or beeswax (Sylvaner, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris). Riesling, when sufficiently mature, exudes characteristic mineral and petroleum aromas. The finish of the best Alsace wines is very long, and it is rare for these wines not to exhibit a certain roundness, a rich yet delicate touch.
Which grape varieties are used in the production of Alsace white wines?
The Alsatian vineyard is rich and produces very aromatic wines. For white wines and crémants from Alsace, seven grape varieties are used in the region: Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Muscat, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois, and Sylvaner. Pinot Noir is used for reds and rosés. These grapes, grown in Alsace vineyards, produce great white wines from Alsace, renowned both in France and around the world. Discovering these vineyards along the Alsace Wine Route is a wonderful journey.
What dishes pair perfectly with an Alsace white wine?
All Alsatian cuisine, from appetizers to desserts: sauerkraut (with charcuterie or fish), baeckeoffe, flammekueche, fruit tarts (especially rhubarb). Aside from Alsace specialties, serve these wines with fish in all its forms, white meats in sauce, veal, pork, and poultry, roasted or casseroled. All charcuterie is a good match for Alsace white wines, as are cheeses—the more mature and runny they are, the better. Mont-d'Or, Munster, Époisses, Soumaintrain, Maroilles, Reblochon, Morbier, but also bloomy crusts such as Camembert and Brie with young wines, or a love match between old Riesling and old Comté. Finally, these wines are compatible with desserts as long as they are not too sweet: puff pastries, fruit tarts, choux pastry, etc. We invite you to discover our selection of the best natural Alsatian wines on our website!
