Grenache is one of the great emblematic grape varieties of the Mediterranean and one of the most cultivated in the world. A black grape variety originating from Spain, it found a privileged territory in France and marked the wine history of many regions. It produces powerful, round, and warm red wines, with intense aromas of ripe fruit. But this grape variety is not limited to its red version: Grenache Blanc and Grenache Gris produce bright white and rosé wines, with floral, fruity, and mineral notes.
Recognized for its adaptability, Grenache thrives in hot and dry climates, offering unique generosity and roundness on the palate. Today, it is present in many countries of the Mediterranean basin and the New World. Thanks to its versatility, it can offer both wines for immediate pleasure and great age-worthy cuvées.
A history rooted in the Mediterranean
The origin of Grenache dates back to Aragon, in northeastern Spain, where it was already cultivated in the Middle Ages. It quickly spread to Catalonia, Rioja, and other Iberian regions before crossing the Pyrenees. From the 15th century, it established itself in Languedoc, Roussillon, and Provence, where it shaped the viticultural identity of Mediterranean estates.
In France, this grape variety is prominent in the great appellations of the Southern Rhône Valley and Roussillon. Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, as well as Banyuls and Maury owe much to Grenache, which expresses rich aromatic complexity and deep color there. These terroirs demonstrate the grape's ability to offer varied styles, ranging from round and fruity wines to powerful and complex cuvées.
Global expansion
Grenache is today one of the most planted grape varieties in the world, covering nearly 160,000 hectares of vines. In addition to Spain and France, it thrives in Italy – particularly in Sardinia, where it is known as Cannonau –, in Greece, and in several Mediterranean regions.
In the New World, this grape variety has found new life. In Australia, in the Barossa Valley, Grenache is used to produce concentrated red wines with spicy aromas. In California, it is at the heart of GSM (Grenache – Syrah – Mourvèdre) blends, reminiscent of the Rhône style. It is also found in South Africa, Argentina, and Chile, where each estate adapts it to its terroir and climate. This expansion proves the flexibility and quality of the grape, capable of producing different wines depending on the region and country.
Synonyms and regional variations
Depending on the regions and countries, Grenache is known by several names. In Spain, it is called Garnacha Tinta, in Sardinia Cannonau. In France, Grenache Gris and Grenache Blanc complete the family, allowing the production of rosé wines and dry white wines. These variants allow estates to use this grape variety for very different styles, always carried by the warmth of the Mediterranean sun.
Physical portrait of the grape variety
The Grenache vine is vigorous and likes poor, dry, and stony soils. Its bunches are large, compact, and its spherical berries, with thin skins, give a light ruby color but wines rich in alcohol. This richness allows for the production of warm cuvées, with supple tannins and a marked roundness.
The grapes of white Grenache, on the other hand, produce clearer white wines, with subtle aromas of pear, apple, and white flowers. Their freshness on the palate complements the sunny image of the grape.
Viticultural characteristics and viticulture
Grenache is a late-ripening grape variety that needs warmth to reach maturity. Its vine is resistant to drought and can offer good yields. However, excessive production can harm quality, hence the importance, for each estate, of controlling its yields to guarantee expressive wines.
Grenache is also sensitive to oxidation: winemakers must use precise winemaking methods to preserve the freshness of its aromas and color.
A seductive aromatic palette
On the nose, Grenache wines reveal aromas of ripe red fruits: strawberry, raspberry, cherry, but also prune, fig, and cocoa with age. Notes of garrigue and spices, typical of Mediterranean terroirs, are often found.
On the palate, the grape is ample, round, and generous, with a long and warm finish. Rosé wines made from Grenache are distinguished by their freshness, pale color, and delicate red fruit aromas. White Grenache, for its part, develops floral and fruity notes, balanced by a beautiful vivacity.
Wine styles and diversity of expressions
Grenache is one of the most versatile grape varieties in the world. It can produce:
Round and fruity red wines, perfect for convivial tasting.
Great complex wines, capable of aging for several decades in the cellar.
Elegant and fresh rosé wines, with a delicate color.
Expressive white wines, made from Grenache Blanc and Grenache Gris.
Natural sweet wines, rich in sugar and aromas, such as Banyuls or Maury.
This diversity makes Grenache an essential grape variety, present in many selections of specialized sites, where enthusiasts can discover bottles of different qualities and at varied prices.
Aging potential and food pairings
Grenache has remarkable aging potential. Great red wines from the Southern Rhône and Roussillon can be kept for 20 to 30 years, developing complex aromas and exceptional depth on the palate.
In gastronomy, food and wine pairings are numerous: grilled meats, simmered dishes, Provençal cuisine, game, aged cheeses. Rosé wines made from Grenache are perfect for summer, while white Grenache pairs with grilled fish and goat cheeses. Natural sweet wines, on the other hand, sublimate chocolate and dried fruit desserts.
Grenache and natural wines
In the world of natural wine, Grenache is widely used by winemakers. Its generous fruit, roundness, and supple tannins make it an ideal grape variety for offering sincere, lively, and easy-to-drink wines.
In France, Spain, Italy, or in the great estates of the New World, Grenache continues to captivate. Each region offers different styles, adapted to its terroir and culture. Each bottle is an invitation to taste, discover, and share, whatever the price.

This Languedoc estate is built on solid foundations: its two winemakers, Rodolphe and Laetitia, are also descendants of winemakers. Even before planting their first vine, they already had a clear objective: "to make southern wines that reflect us, wines with character, rooted in our soils, with freshness and refined tannins." They want to create entirely natural wines, concentrated terroir. In the old Corbières massif, they are taking over an old heart of the estate already planted with abandoned Carignan and Grenache grapes, which have seen neither fertilizer nor pesticides for years: these clean, vibrant soils are ideal conditions for launching into natural wine. Around this historic heart, they first planted Grenache Noir and Syrah, then a plot of white grape varieties: Viognier, Grenache Blanc, Roussanne. The estate has been Ecocert certified since 2010 and also complies with the Nature & Progrès charter. The vinification is done without the addition of sulfites or exogenous yeasts. "We make wines for pleasure," say Laetitia and Rodolphe. For them, natural wine is first assessed by taste, from the harvest. The vintages closely follow the plots, the musts are fruity, fluid, and complex. The wines of Fond Cyprès poetically evoke the estate's ecosystem and the vegetation that protects the plots: the pine forests, the shady springs, the beauty of the natural environment that brings freshness to the wines and leaves the soil's signature. Deliciously balanced between mineral imprint, vegetal environment and expression of fruit, the wines of Fond Cyprès reflect the South: the caress of its sun, but also the freshness of its shadows.

Vin du conservatoire White 2024
Terroir, plot size and grape varieties
Nestled in the unexpected corners of Beaujolais, far from the clichés of ubiquitous Gamay, the 2024 Vin du Conservatoire unveils a little-known and profoundly vibrant facet of this generous land. Crafted by the Tribu Alonso, a collective of winemakers passionate about biodiversity and freedom, this still white wine draws its originality from an atypical plot where Grenache Blanc and Macabeu coexist in perfect harmony. But the magic also comes from a unique, symbiotic planting: Muscat Chardonnay, Floreal, Villard Blanc, and Alain Bouquet intertwine in a vegetal ballet that is both free and precise. Here, each grape variety plays its part in rhythm with the seasons, for a collective expression of the terroir, far from the beaten path.
Cultivation methods
The Tribu Alonso cultivates much more than grapes: it cultivates a philosophy. A philosophy of unconditional respect for all living things, without artifice or labels, but with a keen awareness of the winemaker's role as guardian of a fragile balance. No synthetic treatments, constant observation of the vines, and minimal intervention in the cellar: this is the credo of this committed tribe. Winemaking follows the same guiding principle, where the human hand guides rather than corrects. The result? A wine without makeup, naturally fermented, that expresses the richness of its ecosystem in every glass.
Tasting & pairings
From the first whiff, the 2024 Vin du Conservatoire captivates with its floral finesse: delicate violet, spring white blossoms, and a light whisper of ripe apricot that caresses the senses. On the palate, the tension is palpable, with a vibrant acidity that structures the wine without making it stiff. The texture is supple, almost caressing, carried by a subtly saline and lingering finish. One finds there that sensation of purity, like spring water flowing through living soil.
At the table, this characterful white wine is wonderful as an aperitif, where its freshness awakens the taste buds. It then reveals itself to be a perfect match for smoked fish, trout gravlax, or white meats with herbs, highlighting their aromas without ever overpowering them.
A rare, free and vibrant wine, which tells its own story of Beaujolais.
