Les Orgues Rouge 2019,
Frédéric Gounan
Fruit, minerality, straightforwardness, clean and flavorful red fruits: the volcanic and mineral expression of basalt soils through Pinot Noir, unique to Auvergne, is incomparable. Les Orgues is a pure Auvergne Pinot Noir produced biodynamically on clay-limestone soils rich in granite and basalt. The harvest is crushed and vinified in whole bunches. Aging in barrels is thirty months. This wine calls for traditional hearty dishes, stews, soups with Fourme d'Ambert, pountis or sausages in brioche.

Coming from a family of farmers established in the commune of Saint-Sandoux (Puy-de-Dôme) for at least two centuries, Frédéric Gounan was in his first life a mechanic and prototype creator for the French motorcycle brand Voxan, whose headquarters were in Issoire. He turned away from the industrial world to devote himself to wine with his partner Caroline. He intends to take advantage of the magnificent terroirs of his native village, far from "pissing the vines", as was done in the past: he notes that everything that comes from this land has exceptional taste qualities. He took over plots of Gamay from Auvergne, planted other grape varieties, and ended up producing vintages that are among the tastiest and most sought-after in Auvergne. On this land of the Chaîne des Puys, Pinot Noirs grow on black basalt soils, while Sauvignons and Pinot Gris grow on white clay-limestone soils with basalt pebbles. A fan of organic and biodynamic farming, Frédéric also applies methods that he considers appropriate to the climate and terroir: to facilitate photosynthesis in this harsh and contrasting climate, he practices lyre trellising, which allows the vines' foliage to be aerated and exposed to the sun, guaranteeing ripe fruit at harvest. Always a mechanic at heart, he makes his tools and tinkers with his tractors according to his needs. Its wines are rare and distinguished, highly sought after by connoisseurs: small estate (less than two hectares), small production (by volume, not by spirit).
Ma' Carotte Blanc 2020,
Frédéric Gounan
Lively, fruity, balanced, fresh, and mineral, Ma'Carotte reveals citrus (dried and roasted orange peel), pineapple, and guava on the nose, with hints of honey. A saline finish characteristic of the basalt soil, and a delicious acidity on the finish. Ma'Carotte is a dry white wine from Auvergne made from equal parts Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc, directly pressed. Capped like a beer, it's perfect for all occasions and all pairings. If you see him passing by, take advantage of it, Frédéric doesn't make it every year.

Les Fesses Blanc 2018,
Frédéric Gounan
A beautiful, rich, and distinguished gastronomic wine, beautifully mineral, dominated by notes of honey and white fruits (quince, apple, pear, rhubarb) of remarkable purity. No provocation in the appellation, Les Fesses is the name of the plot from which this white Sauvignon and Pinot Gris, produced biodynamically and using natural vinification, comes. The soils are rich in minerals: clay-limestone, granite, and basalt. The direct-pressed Sauvignon must ferments for six months in vats with the destemmed Pinot Gris, before aging for three years in barrels.

Grandes Orgues Rouge 2018,
Frédéric Gounan
Blessed with superb maturity and great minerality, Les Grandes Orgues by Frédéric Gounan is a single-varietal Pinot Noir from Auvergne grown on basalt soils. Its generous, concentrated body, great liveliness, and freshness make it a sumptuous, lively, energetic wine capable of being enjoyed on its own. Beautiful notes of red fruits mineralized by basalt and lava, a true wine born of the earth. The distinction between Grandes Orgues and Petites Orgues is in no way linked to the plot but to the vintage and the blend. It is made during tasting, at the very end of aging. It is the first wine to be racked, the quintessence of the vintage. What seems the greatest, the most obvious, is the subject of the first blend. Then, the rest is blended to create the Les Petites Orgues cuvée. These Grandes Orgues are a pleasure to enjoy with local cuisine.

Saint-Sandoux is a small commune located in the foothills of the Chaîne des Puys, about thirty kilometers south of Clermont-Ferrand. Along with Aurélien Lefort and Patrick Bouju, Frédéric Gounan is one of the winegrowers reviving Auvergne viticulture, under the banner of natural wine, in the Puy-de-Dôme vineyard belt, this former area of mixed subsistence, wine, and fruit growing that borders the volcanoes from north to south, from Riom to Boudes. The Arbre Blanc vineyard seems to take its name from a large tree planted in the heart of the vines; in fact, this name has been recorded in the land registry for a very long time.
Frédéric comes from a farming family that has lived in Saint-Sandoux since at least the French Revolution. A former mechanic and prototype designer for the French motorcycle brand Voxan (headquartered in Issoire), he refused to integrate into the industrial world and turned to wine. With his partner Caroline, he wanted to work in harmony with nature and take advantage of the magnificent terroirs of his native village, without "spoiling the vines" as in the past: he realized that everything that comes from this land possesses exceptional taste qualities.
Frédéric earned a professional certificate as a farm manager (BPREA). In 1999, he took over plots of Gamay d'Auvergne, planted other grape varieties, and, at the same time, apprenticed with Emmanuel Giboulot in Burgundy. His initial results encouraged him to continue. Its Pinot Noir, Sauvignon, and Pinot Gris vintages are among the tastiest and most sought-after in Auvergne.
We are located in the Chaîne des Puys, a land of lava and basalt. The Pinot Noirs grow on black basalt soil, while the Sauvignon and Pinot Gris grapes grow on white clay-limestone soils with basalt granite. Sometimes, large stones rise up and damage the tools.
Small estate on the Puy de Saint-Sandoux (1.6 ha), composed of 1.10 ha of Pinot Noir and 1/2 ha of white grape varieties, Pinot Gris, and Sauvignon. Frédéric began by cultivating pre-existing Auvergne Gamays, but was unable to maintain these undersized vines for long.
In addition to organic and biodynamic practices, Frédéric is a proponent of photosynthesis, a solution to the harsh and contrasting climate. He practices lyre-shaped training, which exposes the foliage to light and air, which helps produce the sugar that will be transferred to the grapes: a guarantee of fully ripe fruit at harvest. He cultivates the soil biodynamically, particularly with horn manure, and cultivates and straws it. The life of the soil is of the utmost importance to him.
Always a mechanic at heart, Frédéric makes his tools and tinkers with his tractors according to his needs.
All the wines are macerated and without added sulfur, either at bottling or in barrel treatment. The blending is done by tasting the barrels: the best one serves as the basis for the blend. This is the principle behind his red cuvée Grandes Orgues, blended first before the cuvée Petites Orgues. For the whites, the Sauvignon Blanc is directly pressed using a vertical press, to which he adds the destemmed Pinot Gris. At the end of fermentation, the vat is sealed and macerated for six months, then aged for a year in barrels.
For Frédéric Gounan, minerality is not a nebulous concept but a tangible reality: biodynamics promotes minerality through a symbiosis between the soil and the plant. The inert soils of conventional viticulture are, according to him, incapable of transmitting it. His Pinot Noirs express the depth and power of basalt soils and very pure red fruits. The whites are atypical, elegant, and complex, sometimes with notes of quince and rhubarb. Frédéric trusts his wines: he has noticed that, even when they go through difficult, even worrying, periods, they bounce back on their own. This is the very definition of living wines.
